HDMI Signal Booster/Repeater: Buy in Nairobi, from Pro-Logic Technologies
Over long cable runs, HDMI signals weaken — a phenomenon known as signal attenuation. The result is a degraded image with sparkling artefacts, intermittent dropout, or a complete loss of picture. An HDMI signal booster (also called an HDMI repeater) regenerates the HDMI signal mid-run, restoring it to full strength and allowing reliable transmission over distances that would otherwise be problematic. Pro-Logic Technologies in Nairobi stocks HDMI boosters for home and professional AV installations.
Understanding Signal Attenuation
HDMI signals travel as high-frequency electrical data over the cable’s conductors. The higher the frequency (as required for 4K, HDR, and high refresh rates), the faster the signal attenuates over distance. A 4K signal can degrade noticeably over a cable run as short as 10–15 metres, depending on cable quality.
An HDMI booster is placed along the cable run — typically at the midpoint. It receives the weakened incoming signal, amplifies and re-clocks it, and retransmits a clean, full-strength signal onward to the display. This effectively doubles the usable cable run.
Inline Booster vs. Extender
An HDMI inline booster sits between two standard HDMI cables and passively handles the signal regeneration. It requires either power from the HDMI port itself (bus-powered) or a separate USB/DC power supply. A booster is the simplest solution for a single extended cable run.
For very long distances, or where the signal needs to travel over structured cabling (Ethernet cable), an HDMI extender (as covered in the previous article) is a better choice than a simple booster.
Compatibility Considerations
A good HDMI booster is transparent to the devices it serves — it doesn’t alter EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) or HDCP handshaking, ensuring that source and display communicate correctly. Poorly designed boosters can interfere with these handshaking protocols, causing authentication failures or incorrect resolution selection.
At Pro-Logic Technologies, our HDMI signal boosters are carefully selected for compatibility with 4K HDR sources and HDCP 2.2 compliance.
